The Idea of the Human As Seen by Golding and Shakespeare â⬠English Essay
The Idea of the Human As Seen by Golding and Shakespeare ââ¬â English Essay Free Online Research Papers The Idea of the Human As Seen by Golding and Shakespeare English Essay To come to a view of human behavior, one must have a theory of psychology of how we act, and why we do so. This theory would probably stem from one of two things, it could stem from introspection, the analysis of oneself and thus pulling conclusions from this and making generalizations about others, from seeing your own reasoning of why you do things. Of course this would require relatively little amount of delusion to be able to do intelligently. Another way would be outrospection or the analysis of the behaviors of others in their environment. Both of these writers come from very different periods in time, and so it is expected that the mentality would differ greatly, and thus any way they would decide to analyze human behavior will vastly differ for each, as the mentality for the time periods will be different but it seems more plausible for Golding to have used outrospection, especially considering the historical accounts that had taken place, where the wars were much more traumatizing. Being subject of his environment, Goldings view of the human species seems to be much darker then Shakespeareââ¬â¢s. So dark that his book almost comes across as a warning to take accountability for our actions and behavior before were forced to take responsibility for them where the outcome might not have been as good as if we had willingly done so. Though we cant be positive as his view of humans, we can assume that the way these writers view humans and human psychology, is interpreted through their books, and going off of this assumption we can imagine what they think of humans. On page 195 of Goldings Inheritors Lok has discovered the use of similes and begins to make a systematic chain of similes describing the people. He begins by saying The people are like a famished wolf in the hollow of a tree., where people were hungry but were frightened of the world and others, this is how most of us are when we are born, we tend to cling to our mother or father because we are scared of the outside, and would rather stay in the hollow of a tree, where we know its safe. Eventually we trickle out, when we become more comfortable with the world. After being accustomed to the world around us, people go from what was once sweet to becoming the new honey that smells of dead things and fire which represents their fall to corruptions. This co rruption and greed soon ensues the hunger for power, where we were once content with being hungry for knowledge, we now become hungry for possessions and power, and let nothing stand in our way like the river and the fall. After so much false sense of power, and possessions, and domination at the expense of others, we ultimately succumb to our delusion, and start to believe that all these newly conquered and acquired things give us more power, enough to make us believe we are even god. The new people have no hesitation to kill other human beings, where even attacking another human was unfathomable in Lokââ¬â¢s world, now he sees humans take the lives of other humans. If this were to be seen from an outside source such as Lok, this could easily be portrayed as extreme arrogance, to think one would hold himself above otherââ¬â¢s enough to deem themselves able to take lives away from people, surely only Oa would have such power. All of these sentences individually represent his view of humans, but I believe his true vision of humans is seen when all these are strung together to give a chronological view of human evolution which will ultimately lead us to our own demise. Shakespeare doesnt seem to have such a negative view of humans and seems to have more faith in the human race then Golding as seen in Much Ado About Nothing. Of course he acknowledges that there will always be the good and the bad in the world, the same duality that we saw in Inheritors, but on that same note Shakespeare seems to think that as long as one perseveres, that truth and good will always prevail. Shakespeare shows us such huge dualities in personality such as Benedict and Beatrice in respect to Hero and Claudio, where the former seems to have a more cynical view of the respective sex, we start seeing some dramatic changes in both of them. It seems that Shakespeare believes, even if one is more negative to begin with, they will gravitate towards goodness, this is also shown when Boracio and Conrade are caught in the streets talking about how they just conned Don Pedro and Claudio in thinking they it was Hero in the window and are caught by Verges and Dogberry. They could have kept it a secret and lied, but in the name of the greater good, for their honor, they told the truth. In a world where honor, truth, and virtue are above all, what would be more damaging then removing and this is exactly what Don John and Boracio attempt to do to Hero by making her appear as someone who is unfaithful. This indicates that Shakespeare does not only think that one can go from bad to good (as seen by Boracio and Conrade, and to a lesser degree Benedict and Beatrice) but that some are intrinsically born with these qualities such as in Hero who comes across as being very serene and pure. One of the underlying themes in both cases is the change or the evolution of the people. Golding seems more to want to tell us that the evolution shown in the book, becoming the new people a much greater evil, is what has happened. In Goldingââ¬â¢s world men are seen as corruptible and will eventually fall to this corruption, as dominating and power hungry creatures. We went from being very peaceful and being so innocent to something with ambitions to conquer others, while most of the change that occurs in Much Ado About Nothing seem to be much more positive. It never seemed like a personality trait of Boracioââ¬â¢s or Conradeââ¬â¢s that they would admit to saying the truth to anything and yet we see them say the truth even though it puts them at risk, a sacrifice for truth. Nor did we ever expect Benedict or Beatrice to ever fall in love, even more so with each other, because of their radical views in regards to the opposite sex. But truth and good prevailed in the end. At Your Disposal
At Your Disposal At Your Disposal At Your Disposal By Maeve Maddox Some speakers, perhaps because of their familiarity with the word disposal in connection with trash, seem to have trouble with the polite idiom ââ¬Å"at your disposal.â⬠For example, I saw this comment on a Yahoo forum: ââ¬Å"If you are at their disposal, it is derogatory and demeaning.â⬠Disposal and its different forms descend from Latin disponere, ââ¬Å"to set in different places, to arrange.â⬠The verb has more than one meaning, including the following: to place or arrange things in a particular order to make fit or ready to make arrangements to get rid of The noun disposal can mean the action of disposing of something. In the expression ââ¬Å"at oneââ¬â¢s disposal,â⬠it means ââ¬Å"the power or right to dispose of, make use of, or deal with as one pleases.â⬠The notion that the person ââ¬Å"at oneââ¬â¢s disposalâ⬠is ââ¬Å"under the command of anotherâ⬠is doubtless the reason for objections to the expression by literalists. Language has its polite conventions, and most people can tell the difference between convention and sincerity. Literalists, however, object to addressing a letter ââ¬Å"Dear Sirâ⬠and signing it ââ¬Å"Yours faithfullyâ⬠on the grounds that the language is ââ¬Å"too intimateâ⬠to use with a stranger. Taking the quotation a little out of context, Iââ¬â¢ll let Dr. Johnson explain the difference between sincerity and social convention: you may say to a man, ââ¬Å"Sir, I am your most humble servant.â⬠You are not his most humble servant. You may say, ââ¬Å"These are sad timesâ⬠You dont mind the times. You tell a man, ââ¬Å"I am sorry you had such bad weather the last day of your journey, and were so much wet.â⬠You dont care six-pence whether he was wet or dry. You may talk in this manner; it is a mode of talking in Societyâ⬠Speakers who object to putting a person at someoneââ¬â¢s disposal can still use the idiom in regard to an object or a facility. Here are some examples of current usage: Rest assured that Alotta Properties, Inc. will be at your disposal for as long as you need us. Anecdotal evidence is great and itââ¬â¢s even better the more of it you have at your disposal. But, my good sir, why do you come to me? Your motive is most excellent, but an honest employment is the last thing at my disposal. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? History of Transportation in America Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
History of Transportation in America - Essay Example During this time period, transportation in America was initially slow, tedious, and difficult. There were limited choices of transportation and they were all exhausting. Variations on the horse and buggy were the most popular means of transportation, which was adequate for journeys across town, but not for longer trips. Longer trips were very costly as well as dangerous. Covered wagon crossings were notorious for their hazards yet did not deter the pioneer spirit. The Civil war had both a positive and negative effect on transportation in America. Parts of the country - most notably the South were in ruins, and many citizens were bankrupted by the war and thus unable to travel. The B&O railroad suffered severely during Confederate raids. In one summer alone, Stonewall Jackson made off with fourteen locomotives. (Stover 1970) However many advancements were made in the name of warfare including a larger transportation system that was previously used to help move troops. With the development of the transcontinental railroad, and the final meeting of the two lines in 1869 transportation became more significantly easier. The project was originally established in the Pacific Railway Act of 1862. It quickly surpassed the former means of travel such as stagecoach lines and wagon trains. The achievement of a uniform gauge for the railroad tracks greatly assisted in the development of the transcontinental railroad. (Stover 1970) Also of note was the development of a uniform time zone system, allowing the trains to arrive and depart on a agreed upon schedule. (Stover 1970) The outcome of these advances led to drastic changes in the landscape of the country. The far reaches of the country were now reachable with a little bit of time and money. What would have previously taken months, and a significant risk and investment was now accessible for $65 and a 7 day train ride. (Stover 1970) Unit 2 1877-1920 Transportation in the time period between 1877-1920 was a fast paced race to development. Advancements in railroads continued, while the automobile, electric cable systems, and underground railway (subway) systems began their rapid growth. Socially speaking, Americans were now on the move with easier access to both personal and mass transit. Mass transit systems of electric cars became commonplace in the 1880's and 1890's, replacing the roads previously clogged with horses and buggies. (Carson 1999) The first underground subway system was built in Boston and opened in 1897. This allowed city dwellers to travel within their city with relative ease and comfort. Inter-city travel was still primarily by either train, or traveling along the mail route roads on some sort of horse-driven apparatus. People who resided further out in the country were still rather isolated as the only transportation accessible was the railways which usually ran only between larger cities with few stops in between. (Carson 1999) The railroads also catered to the wealthier clientele, leaving the common passenger looking for an alternative means of transportation. Then, the automobile arrived. The automobile is a four-wheeled vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. It was the result of a series of inventions which began in 1769 with Cugnot's steam-powered road vehicle. Observation Mini-Study Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Observation Mini-Study - Research Paper Example Using direct observation as the main approach to data collection, the researcher sought to establish whether the hypothesis of racial disparity in the sitting arrangement existed, and possibly find ways of resolving the issue by creating race parity. The researcher sought permission from the university and the management of a middle-level restaurant existing near the university well in advance prior to the study. The restaurant is situated a few miles from the university, a development that limited research-related costs upon the researcher. Sitting comfortably at the back of the restaurant between 11:00pm and 4:00pm, the researcher gathered information about the sitting arrangements, the peopleââ¬â¢s behavior and what they were saying. The outcomes revealed that in deed more whites preferred executive seats and tables stationed at the front part of the restaurant with more adequate spaces between them and tended to refer to the other races in derogatory remarks like ââ¬Å"front seats are for whitesâ⬠. In light of this, people of color including Hispanics, blacks, Africans, and Asians found themselves relegated at the back of the restaurant where the furniture were more closely-packed. This finding lends credence to the hypothesis that racial disparity plays out in the sitting arrangement of people in US restaurants. Observation as a method of research has merits and demerits. A major merit of conducting observation research is that the researcher can record what they see and hear as the focus group goes about their normal activities in real life situations, rather than relying on what they say they do (Maxfield, & Babbie, 2010). As Maxfield and Babbie (2010) have pointed out, in Criminology, observation is the main source of securing information, especially in situations where approaching criminal suspects for interview or written responses is less likely to precipitate

Chaucers Canterbury Tales - Knights Tale :: Chaucer Knights Tale Essays
In his prologue, Chaucer introduces all of the characters who are involved in this fictional journey and who will tell the tales. One of the most interesting of the characters introduced is the Knight. Chaucer refers to the Knight as ââ¬Å"a most distinguished manâ⬠and, indeed, his sketch of the Knight is highly complimentary.à Another Knight seen in the ââ¬Å"Canterbury Talesâ⬠is the rapist knight in the Wife of Bathââ¬â¢s Tale, who is not a very noble knight and doesnââ¬â¢t follow a chivalric code. This knight seems more realistic as opposed to the stereotypical ideal knight that Chaucer describes in the Prologue. It is hard to believe that such aà perfect knight existed during that time. à à à à Today we look back at knighthood, chivalry, and ââ¬Å"curteisyeâ⬠as romantic and unreal. It is true that a code ofà behavior did exist, and Chaucer presents the Knight as a real representative of the code. However the Knight in the Wife of Baths tale, is the complete opposite of this one, and violates all of the rules of Knighthood. By way of contrast the Knight in The Wife of Bathââ¬â¢s Tale is more common during the Middle Ages, and stories of rape by knights were not uncommon. Chaucer goes against the normal chivalric ideal of a knight by presenting a knight as he really might have been, which is the knight presented in The Wife of Bathââ¬â¢s Tale. As all of the different tales reflect back on the characters of the pilgrims who tell them, the ideas in the Knightââ¬â¢s Tale are reflected back on the Knight.à His tale is a tale of ideal love and chivalry, and fits the character of the Knight. Furthermore, fitting the Knightââ¬â¢s character, his tale has no incidents of vulgarity, the love is a clean love, with no hint of sensuality. The love exists on a high, platonic level.à In the article ââ¬Å"Costume Rhetoric in the Knightââ¬â¢s Portrait:à Chaucerââ¬â¢s Every-Knight and his Bismotered Gyphon,â⬠by Laura F. Hodges, featured in the April 1995 edition of the Chaucer Review, Hodges examines the reasons behind Chaucerââ¬â¢s decisions on the clothing of his Knight. Hodges said that the fact that the Knight was wearing soiled clothing is an allusion to the fact that the knight was soiled religiously. However I think his shirt was ââ¬Å"much stainedâ⬠by where the armor had left his mark, and he just arrived from service and went directly on his pilgrimage.

Different examples of power Essay
What is power? What are different examples of power? How can people gain and maintain power? Power is being able to make something happen or prevent something from happening. You know if someone has power if they are leaders or if they are respected. If youââ¬â¢re a good influence you can also gain power because people begin to follow in your footsteps. Examples of power are political, economic, and social. Political power is an authority held by a group within society that allows for the administration of public resources and implement policies for society. The President has political power and the governor has political power. Social power is the degree of influence that an individual or organization has among their peers and within their society as a whole. Martin Luther King had social power and Malcolm X also had social power. Economic power is organization of the money, industry, and trade of a country, region, or society. Jay Z has economic power because he has money. My essay is going to be about stop and frisk and how often it is being used by police officers and how it affects the people in neighborhoods it is constantly happening in and the statistics on the frisking. In New York City police officers have a program called stop and frisk which is when a person is stopped by a cop and patted down to examine if the person is carrying a weapon or if the person is engaging in illegal activity. This type of limited search occurs when police confront a suspicious person in an effort to prevent a crime from taking place. A stop is different from an arrest. An arrest is a lengthy process in which the suspect is taken to the police station or booked and a frisk is only a temporary search. If the officer uncovers further evidence during the frisk, the stop may lead to an actual arrest, but if no further evidence is found, the person is let go. Unlike a full search, a frisk is only limited to a patting down of the outer clothing. If the officer feels something like a weapon, the officer may then reach inside the personââ¬â¢s clothing. If no weapon is felt, the search may not go any further than the outer clothing. In 2011, New Yorkers were stopped by police 685,724 times by police officers and 88 percent of them were totally innocent. 34 percent were African Americans & 34 percent where Latinos. 51 percent were though age 14 to 24, only 9 percent were Caucasian.. In the first nine months of 2012, New Yorkers were stopped by police 443,422 times. 89 percent were completely innocent. 55 percent wereà black and 32 percent were Latinos, 10 percent were white. Stop and frisk causes people to be afraid of the police because when they are around they have to worry about being frisked by them. ââ¬Å"Stop-and-Frisk abuses corrode trust between the police and communities, which makes everyone less safe. I know people that get very scared when the police come around because he had been frisked a lot of times. Police officers also sometimes use physical force when frisking people. For example, if you are getting frisked and you try to resist, the police will sometimes use physical force on you because they may feel like youââ¬â¢re disobeying them. Stop and frisk is a violation of the Fourth Amendment. The Fourth Amendment says ââ¬Å"people have the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.â⬠Mayor Bloomberg and police say stop and frisk has helped New York reach a low crime rate. New York has the lowest crime rate among the nationââ¬â¢s biggest cities, said by the FBI. People call the stop and frisk practice racial discrimination. Aggressive stop-and-frisk practices are having a profound effect on individuals, groups and communities across the city. Residents of some New York City neighborhoods describe a police presence so pervasive and hostile that they feel like they are living in a state of siege. w deeply this practice impacts individuals and they document widespread civil and human rights abuses, including illegal profiling, improper arrests, inappropriate touching, sexual harassment, humiliation and violence at the hands of police officers.
